How Much Can You Save by Switching to Vaping?

A poll of 1,790 people from the UK who are in the process of, or have actually made the transition from smoking to vaping, found more than half switched to save money. The smokers who have switched to vaping save on average £346.32 a year after kicking the habit, a new poll has suggested.

The financial implications of buying packets of cigarette is one of the main consideration for those who now vape instead, the survey found. As well as saving money, smelling resher and no longer having a bad smoker’s cough were also lauded as reasons why people have switched.

Other positives of abandoning cigarettes included having better teeth and improved breathing, according to three in 10 of those surveyed.

A total of 43 per cent said they felt less stressed after switching and over two thirds said they would "never" go back to smoking.

“There are now over three million vapers in the UK who have made that life changing decision to switch from smoking," said Dr Christian Jessen after viewing the results from the survey which was commissioned by the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA). “But yet, according to Public Health England, an incredible 40 per cent of smokers have never even tried vaping.”

The research carried out also found since saving money, three in 10 have then saved up for a holiday or put money into a savings account.

Eighty per cent of respondents would recommend converting to e-cigarettes to those who are trying to quit. On average, those polled used to get through a staggering 5,216 cigarettes a year.

How Much Could you Save?

The Cost of Smoking

Every brand of cigarette has a different price so we will use the average cost. In the UK, this is £10.40 for a pack of 20.

For smokers who go through a pack a day, the maths is simple: £10.40 per pack x 365 days in a year = a whopping £3,796 a year!

AS we can see smoking is expensive! on top of that the government usually increases the Tax on Cigrattes on a yearly basis

The Cost of Vaping

To calculate the cost of a basic vape setup there are several parts to consider:

  • The e-cigarette Device
  • Coils
  • Batteries
  • E-liquids

The E-Cigarette

There is a bewildering choice of e-cigarette devices on the market but to buy a decent one along with a tank you would be looking to spend about £50

Coils

Coils require replacing on average every 2 weeks (this depends on how heavy you vape and the eliquids used) so this would equate to 26 coils per year. An average price for a pack of 5 coils would be £10.99 which gives us an annual total of 6 packs X £10.99 = £65.94

Batteries

If your device has a separate re-chargeable battery, they dont need replacing often, but we will factor in a spare pair at £7.99 each so a total of £15.98

E-Liquids

Finally we come to the eliquids. We will assume that as you have just quit you will require a higher strength to start with (12mg or 18mg). This would be available in 100ml Bottles for £17.99. If you were a heavy smoker you may get through 10-30ml per week, less if you were a lighter smoker.

We will assume a heavy use of 25ml per week which would mean the 100ml Bottle would last 4 weeks meaning you would require 13 Bottles for the year at a cost of £233.87

The grand total for vaping for the year is:£365.79

  • The e-cigarette Device:£50
  • Coils:£65.94
  • Batteries:£15.98
  • E-liquids:£233.87

This represents an approximate saving of: £3,430.21 !!

Even if you doubled the amount of e-liquid and coils required, you would still be saving over £3000.

Just think what you could save for or buy by switching to vaping .... and thats not even including the health benefits!
